Add an Open Graph image

og:image is the Open Graph property that supplies the preview image a link shows when it is shared on social platforms and in chat apps. The broader seo.open-graph check passes as soon as any og: property exists, so a page can pass that and still share as a plain, imageless card; this check answers specifically whether that preview will carry an image, which is the single biggest driver of click-through on a shared link.

Why it matters

Links shared without an og:image render as a plain text card on social platforms and chat apps, and a card with an image draws far more clicks than one without.

How to fix

  1. 1 Add <meta property="og:image" content="..."> pointing at an absolute URL (not a relative path, which many platforms fail to resolve).
  2. 2 Use an image meeting the common minimum of 1200x630 so it is not cropped or rejected.
  3. 3 Re-share the URL through each platform's debugger to refresh its cached preview.

Common mistakes

  • Setting og:title and og:description but omitting og:image, so the share card renders as text with no picture.
  • Pointing og:image at a relative URL: most platforms require an absolute URL and silently drop a relative one.
  • Using an image below a platform minimum (commonly 1200x630), so the preview renders cropped, letterboxed, or blank.

How to verify

  1. 1 View page source and confirm an <meta property="og:image"> tag is present with an absolute URL.
  2. 2 Run the URL through each platform's sharing debugger and confirm the preview shows the intended image.
  3. 3 Paste the link into a chat app and visually confirm the card includes the image.
