Free Pingdom Tools alternative
Pingdom Tools measures how fast one page loads and draws you the request chart, and if that is the question, it is free and it is good at it. EngineeringScore measures load time and page weight too, then keeps going into the same page's headers, cookies, SEO tags and accessibility. The overlap is real and partial, and the parts that do not overlap run in both directions.
What we don't replace
- Uptime monitoring. Pingdom Tools is the free test in front of a paid monitoring product, and Pingdom's uptime monitoring page describes testing your site's availability from servers around the world and double-checking an error before it tells you. We run one scan when you ask for one and say nothing at all in between.
- Alerting. Pingdom's alerting page describes notifying you by email, SMS and push notification, routing to individuals or whole teams by severity, and integrating with Slack, VictorOps, OpsGenie and PagerDuty. Nothing here notifies anyone of anything.
- Transaction checks. Pingdom's transaction monitoring page describes recording a login, signup or checkout flow and replaying it in a real Chrome browser on a schedule, alerting the moment a step fails. Our scan loads one page, signed out, and never clicks anything.
- Choosing where the test runs from. The Pingdom Tools page puts a test-from location selector next to the URL box; our scan runs from wherever our servers are and offers you no choice about it.
- Watching one URL over time. Pingdom's page speed monitoring page describes re-testing a page on a schedule and reading the historical trend to see whether a change had the intended effect. Every result here is a single moment with nothing to compare it against.
What we replace
- Load time and page weight for one URL, measured in a real browser: total transferred bytes, request count, oversized images, and the browser's own loadEventEnd milestone on a cold cache.
- The questions a speed test does not ask, on the same page and in the same report: response headers, HTTPS and redirect behaviour, the cookies that got set and the attributes they carry, on-page SEO tags, and an accessibility run.
- Naming what to actually remove. Page weight is split into video, images, third-party requests and your own code, and the finding names whichever of the four is heaviest, so the advice points at the thing that is genuinely large instead of listing every optimisation in the same order every time.
- Judging request count by protocol instead of by folklore. Once more than half of a page's first-party requests are served over HTTP/2 or HTTP/3, request count stops being flagged as a bottleneck, and the finding says what that share actually was rather than claiming a unanimity the page did not have. The bundle-everything advice is scored only where it still applies.
Where Pingdom Tools is stronger
- The Pingdom Tools page describes a website speed test built to help you analyse your load speed and find what is slow or too big, meant for experts and novices alike, and it is free to run with no account.
- Pingdom Tools breaks a request into the phases the browser was actually in. Its page documents chart bars coloured for DNS, SSL, connect, send, wait, receive and blocked, which is how you tell a slow server apart from a slow network. We record each request's size, status and negotiated protocol, and nothing about where its milliseconds went.
- Where the delay is in the connection rather than in the bytes, Pingdom Tools will find it and we will not. We measure sizes, counts and one load milestone, which is a coarser instrument, and that is the honest description of it.
- Pingdom Tools is the free face of a monitoring product, and the product does things a one-off scan cannot. Pingdom's page speed monitoring page describes filmstrip screenshots capturing the page every 500ms through the load, aggregated performance grades, and ranking a page against Yslow's performance matrix.
- Pingdom tests from a lot of places. Its uptime monitoring page describes monitoring availability from over 100 servers worldwide with selectable regions, where the free Pingdom Tools test offers a region selector and we offer one fixed origin.
Where we're stronger
A speed measurement that arrives with the rest of the page attached. The same scan that gives you bytes and load time also says whether HSTS, Content-Security-Policy and a clickjacking header are there, whether your cookies carry Secure and HttpOnly, and what axe-core made of the markup.
Third-party weight is counted by vendor, not by hostname. Requests are grouped by registrable domain, so one vendor serving from four subdomains counts once, and the finding says how many requests came from how many distinct vendors rather than implying four problems where there is one.
Oversized images are told apart from unfixable ones. Every image request over 300,000 bytes is flagged, and when every oversized image on the page is already WebP or AVIF the advice changes from convert the format to resize or compress harder, because there is nothing left to convert. An oversized image whose Content-Type we never captured counts as not modern, deliberately, since claiming credit for a format we did not observe would be a false pass.
Compression and caching are judged on your own assets. Uncompressed HTML, script and stylesheet responses are counted only for first-party URLs and above a 1,000-byte floor, since compressing a tiny response can make it larger; the exception is a response whose size we never learned, a chunked or streamed document, which is flagged whatever the floor says, because that is exactly the asset the check most needs to catch. Missing Cache-Control counts only on first-party images, scripts and stylesheets, so another company's CDN configuration never lands in your report as your defect.
The load-time number comes with its disclaimer attached. It is one unthrottled visit on a cold cache from a single machine, our free speed test page says exactly that, and it is not a stand-in for a slow phone on a slow network or for what your visitors actually experienced.
